Newsletter 8
Dear Fellow Multihuller´s!
Welcome to Copenhagen!
Finally you will arrive at the goal for your trip – Copenhagen! The biggest city in Scandinavia in the middle of one of the most expansive regions of Europe, the Öresund region.
If it is the first visit you do, there is so much to discover about the attractions of the city, the culture and you know – the Danes are rather nice to meet too!

Hej Multihullers

Dear Multihull Sailors.
We are so much looking forward to seeing you. At the moment some 87 boats have registred so you will be the participants to the Greatest IMM ever. IMM Banquet in Langelinie It can hardly be greater. This Newsletter will contain a description of how to get into The Port of Copenhagen.

We can’t wait to see you!
Povl Schmidt
Regatta Manager

Copenhagen was founded 1167 and the purpose was to protect Öresund for trade and that gave of course a brilliant opportunity to tax the merchant ships with customs later. J

Just outside the port entrance you see two islands, this was islands made to defend Copenhagen built just before the First World War. The closest is Middelgrund Fort, that one is very charming but only open for special occasions. The other Flakfortet is a very special island for every sailor in Öresund. It is an island that at the same time is very relaxing and also exiting with a very dramatic history. You are well protected from all wind directions and it is close to Copenhagen.
Our fantastic Regatta Manager Povl Schmidt have been organising a Multihull Meeting here the last eleven years and that will continue.
There is a very special feeling when you sit at the top of the island at night, You have all the lights from the cities around Öresund so close and so very far away at the same time. It is very easy to be philosophical after an evening together with fellow Multihuller´s!
It is also said that this was the last place the Danish gave up during the Second World War, they where fighting three days after the rest of the country – maybe it was that point with the customs again??

Take some time to discover some part of ancient Copenhagen by studying this fantastic map from 1837 where you can see how the city is built with its defence system. There is a possibility to zoom in to all the details in the map by just position the mouse pointer over some part that is interesting and then scroll with your mouse wheel. Very nice!

This will be part of your homework before the trip to IMM 2009.

To really give you a memory that you never will forget we are going to show Copenhagen from a new angel. We are going to use our dinghies to make a roundtrip in the canals that everyone will remember. We are sure that Copenhagen will notice us and remember that IMM came to town!

There are some traffic regulations we like to inform about regarding the Port of Copenhagen. It is very important that you follow the rules and help us to give the city a good impression of all Multihuller´s. IMM will have personal at hand to give advice and there will also be a dedicated VHF channel to use.
On the enclosed map there are some traffic rules and for everyone that does not speak the wonderful language Danish I will try to translate:

  1. All yachts shall pass through Lynetteløpet.
  2. Passing Kronløbet is only allowed by commercial ships.
  3. Yacht shall pass east of yellow buoys.
  4. Sailing route to southern Frihavn.
  5. Passing in and out of the entrance of our harbour is not aloud when red lights flash due to ferry traffic. One of the occasions is at 17.00 when the Norwegian ferry leaves. Believe me – you do not want to meet that one!
  6. From the line and south are yachts only aloud to motor.

Please follow these simple rules and everyone will be happy!

There is so much to say about this magnificent city but I think it is better to let the real experts at Wonderful Copenhagen tell you about it. Log in to their webpage here!

Here is a useful tip from our friend Tito about Open WiFi, it is a map with free hotspots around Denmark. Maybe it can be of help for you.

There is still time to join IMM 2009! But hurry!
Fill in your entry in the form at the website!
